Golden Wedding Couples Guests of Bangor News

Two-days. Round of Parties, Theatre-going,
Sight-seeing and Shopping; Enjoy Active and
Varied Program
Perhaps the most unusual party ever known in Bangor was held yesterday, when six of the nine couples in the town of Patten who have been married 50 years or more were. entertained by the Bangor Daily NEWS."In these modern days when courtships end in a few hours, and many marriages in a few days or weeks, you are furnishing us a truly refreshing example," they were told by Harold O. Sanborn, president of the Chamber of Commerce. That was, perhaps, the keynote of the day.A Boston newspaper once entertained five couples who had observed their golden wedding anniversaries in the town of Milo. This seemed a little remarkable-and it was. Far more remarkable, therefore, to find nine couples in Patten, which has only 1300 residents; and editors of THE NEWS have had no more pleasant task than welcoming the six who came here as the paper's guests. These six were:Mr. and Mrs. Luther Belmain, who have been married 61 years; Mr. and Mrs. John Shorette, 58 years; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard V. Stevens, 56 years; Mr. and Mrs. William Hudson, 55 years; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Finch, 53 years; Mr. and Mrs. Stevie Giles, 51 years. Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Rowe, 51 years, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin O. Drew, 53 years, were not able tocome.
