Patten Students Win Top Honors in Prize Contest

PATTEN May 26— Frances Moore and Arthur Peavey representing Patten academy took top honors at the annual prize speaking contest of the Katahdin Valley league Thursday evening at Hodgdon High school. Marv Elizabeth Soule of Merrill High school won second honors for girls and Eugene Emerson of Island Falls High school placed second for the boys The program was as follows: First Prize March Hodgdon High ,Mary Elizabeth Soule Merrill High, Biff Perkins Toboggan Slide,Lewis ,Swallow Oakfield High Brothers Take a Bow Jeannette Ingraham Sher- man High "La Golondrlna" Hodgdon High girls' glee club America A World Power Philip Bickford, Hodgdon High The Beau of Bath Frances Moore Patten academy Submerged Eugene Emerson, Island Falls High selections "Light and Airy" sehottosche, Hodgon High band.

FATHER-SON BANQUET
After the banquet which was served by a Orange committee assisted by interested matrons of the town a program was carried out Maynard Sawyer head of the commercial department and athletic roach at Patten academy acid at toastmaster and led the group Singing which opened the program - Tills was followed by a group of number by Fred Newcomb "Tommy Lad" "A Jolly Old Rover" and "Without a Song".
Mr. Sawyer introduced as the first speaker Lionel Kilgore who spoke for the fathers in audience and after expressing his pleasure at being present told the fathers the 'sons of today would be the fathers of tomorrow and. that if they wished their boys to measure up they must lead the way Mr Kilgore was followed by Arthur Peavey president of the senior class at Patten academy who made the response for the sons He spoke of the numberless opportunities open to the boy of today which his father never
had and voiced the thought that with the greater opportunities for youth there were also greater responsibilities
The guest speaker was the Rev Lewis Distant pastor of the Congregational church at Sherman Mills who spoke first to the fathers telling them that even though they were engrossed with the business of financing their homes the must not neglect their sons not sons and he urged them to practice their home teaching to listen to and be advised by their fathers The program closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" by the group. The sum cleared by the Grange will be added to Founders Memorial fund.
A big event in the annals of the Boy Scout troop took place at Patten Grange Hall when the organization received its charter, entire troop was present with their leader William Nott and five of the six members of the local committee, as well as 20 members of the Island Falls troop, With their leader Mr. Sinclair and eight of their local committee.
Other distinguished guests were District f Scout Executive Perry Jackson of the Aroostook district and Commissioner Dr C I Swett of Island Falls Russell Tuck and Jack Seeley were color bearers for the evening and Archie Steen acted as master of ceremonies.
Clifford S Grindal chairman of the committee welcomed the guests and presented the various speakers. Mr. Jackson presented the group with its charter. The organization is to keep the number of the old troop being known as No 33.
Mr. Scribner made a brief talk followed by Edward Lent who presented the troop with a cup, the property of the old troop 33, won in a tug of war at Boy Scout games in 1932.
A court of honor was held with one member of the Island Falls troop being awarded second class honors and three others first class honors A group of six local boys were awarded their tenderfoot pins: Joseph Violette, Robert Smallwood, Archie Steen, Chester Coolong, John Gardner and Arnold Porter Dr Swett showed an educational film of a trip through a Fuller Brush factory.
Loral committee men present were Herbert Hatt Joseph Hall Dr George Hoekzema, Edgar Hudson and Clifford Grindal, D R Woodbury, who was ill at the time was unable to be present. The troop will meet Tuesday evening of this week at the Grange Hall.
